"Choro do Gringo" (composed and arranged by Mckenna Reeve) is a lively spin on two classic Brazilian genres, choro and samba. This 8 part piece divides players into two groups--mallet percussionists who fill the roles of the choro's dancing contrapuntal instruments and syncopated harmony, and the batería that coaxes the choro into a samba.
Some of the instruments are referred to by their Brazilian names, but most have a more common substitute that will work if you don't have access. The piece is great for exposing young musicians to Brazilian music, and with improvisational elements in 2 of the keyboard parts it makes a great vehicle for expanding your ensemble's comfort zones as well. This piece would make for an energetic start to a concert and will show off a variety of skills at festivals and competitions for a strong high school or college ensemble.
Instrumentation:
Xylophone, Vibraphone, Marimba 1 (optional split 1a + 1b), Marimba 2
Pandeiro/Surdos
Repique
Shaker/Triangle/Agogo
Ride Cymbal/Chocalho
Included:
-11x17 PDF score
-8.5x11 PDF parts
-mp3 reference recording (hybrid MIDI and live)
-stage plot for performance
